During our field school, students partially excavated the wreck Ada K. Damon at Steep Hill Beach near Ipswich, Mass. The course, accredited through Salem State University and in cooperation with Mass. Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources, is an intensive intro to maritime archaeology techniques and skills, with the final day spent mapping and analyzing data from the research they completed. Students also received Nautical Archaeology Society certification (NAS Intro and Part 1) for the class.
Students examined artifacts and ship building techniques at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, practiced the skills of measuring offsets on the East Indiaman Friendship, at Salem Maritime National Historic Site, and explored the Crane Estate, held by the Trustees of Reservations.
